Thailand alcohol ban to end?

23 Jul 2024

Thailand's prime minister has announced that he is considering ending a 52-year-old ban on afternoon alcohol sales. This was following a proposal from tourism hospitality operators.

The Thai Restaurant Business Association has submitted a proposal to change the laws which ban the sale of alcohol between 14h00 and 17h00 and also to implement tax breaks for the sector, due to rising costs and lower consumer spending, reports bloomberg.com.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin published a statement on the Royal Thai Government website, saying that he has agreed to take into consideration the proposal submitted. However, the government will be looking at it from a broader perspective. Thavisin noted that the government is currently actively promoting tourism.
