TNW pick of the week: DoT ‘keeping an eye’ on fastjet

fastjet has still not engaged with the Department of Transport (DoT) regarding its modus operandi, despite having set yet another launch date for its flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The airline recently released a statement saying it had postponed the launch of flights to early July and claiming that tickets would go on sale “shortly”.

However, much uncertainty still surrounds the low cost carrier’s plans. Andries Ntjane, deputy director: licensing and permits for the DoT, confirmed to TNW that fastjet had still not submitted an application to change the name on Federal Air’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC). After its deal with 1time fell through, fastjet announced that it would be launching local flights in South Africa by the end of May, using Federal Air’s AOC and wet-leased aircraft from StarCargo Airlines.

Andries explained that it would be possible for Federal Air to operate the flights on behalf of fastjet using its existing aircraft but should the airline use new aircraft or sell tickets under the fastjet name it would need to go through the CAA and DoT’s necessary regulatory processes. For now, Andries says, the DoT is keeping an eye on fastjet.
