TNW pick of the week: R1,6m consumer fund for 1time pax

A R1,6m consumer guarantee is available to refund 1time passengers who paid cash for their tickets, according to Air Services Licensing Council (ASLC) deputy director: licensing and permits, Andries Ntjane.

He told TNW that 1time had lodged the guarantee with the council when it applied for a licence in 2007, as is required of all airline applicants in terms of aviation law in South Africa. He said the council was consulting with 1time’s liquidators on how passengers would be reimbursed. No further information on the process was available at the time of going to print, nor how far the R1,6m would stretch to reimburse passengers.

On its Facebook page, 1time has asked passengers to direct cash/EFT queries in writing to br@1time.co.za, providing their booking reference and contact details, but warned this would be a long process.

Meanwhile, ceo of Aasa, Chris Zweigenthal, says local aviation is in crisis. Aasa wants a meeting with new transport minister, Ben Martins, to ensure he understands the problems facing local airlines and to discuss the strategies ahead.
