UK goes greener with 10% SAF by 2030

The UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) announced on Thursday, April 25, that by 2030, the jet fuel used on all departing flights must comprise 10% of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In addition, 2% of SAF on all departing flights will be mandated by 2025, according to flightglobal.com.

“UK ministers have formally set out a target for 2% of jet fuel in 2025 to be sustainable aviation fuel, a step toward a mandate for 10% of jet fuel to be sustainable by 2030,” said Mark Harper, UK Transport Secretary.

The mandate has been in the pipeline for nearly four years, with one of the first mentions dating back to November 2020. Here, the UK government announced its Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, which included the use of SAF to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“Sustainable aviation fuel protects the future of the UK aviation, the thousands of British jobs that depend on it, and the holidays and business travel flights that we all rely on,” Harper told ft.com.

The plan to enforce the use of 2% SAF is subject to parliamentary approval, which the government hopes to secure later this year, reported flightglobal.com.
