US protests: Tourists welcome, but stay alert

Amid ongoing protests, the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board is advising visitors to remain vigilant.

The protests, which began on June 6, follow a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (UCE) raids across the country targeting farms, retailers, restaurants and hotels.

While there have been protests in New York City, Newark, New Jersey, Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco, Los Angeles has seen the most significant disruptions.

The protests in Downtown LA escalated on June 7, prompting President Donald Trump to authorise the deployment of around 2 000 National Guard and 700 Marine personnel to the greater Los Angeles area.

In response, LA Mayor Karen Bass implemented a curfew in the area, which currently prohibits all outdoor activity between 22h00 and 06h00.

The curfew area includes Chinatown, the Arts District and the LA Live entertainment district.

“Visitors are advised to stay informed, follow local guidance, and steer clear of areas experiencing temporary disruptions. In coordination with local agencies, law enforcement has increased its presence in parts of Downtown Los Angeles to enhance public safety,” said the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board statement.

The statement also warned that some protests or public gatherings might cause delays or detours in Metro bus and rail services.

However, the board also emphasised that LA remained open for business, and that events such as concerts at the Hollywood Bowl and Greek Theatre, Dodgers home games, and exhibitions at cultural institutions, would proceed as planned.
