Venice readies for tourist tax

06 Dec 2023
Comments | 0

Starting in April, Venice will begin charging day-trippers visiting on peak weekends US$5,45 (R103,23) per person.

The fee will go towards better regulating the city's tourism industry, easing congestion, cleaning its canals and making life easier for residents.

According to Venice's Mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, the fee is not a tourist tax but rather an incentive to discourage travellers from visiting during peak days.

The fee will be trialled for 29 days between April and mid-July during the peak hour window of 08h30 to 16h00. Visitors who come in after those hours for dinner or to attend the theatre will not have to pay the fee. Residents, students, workers and visitors who are staying overnight at a hotel in the city will also not have to pay the fee.

A special website will be created for paying visitors, and they will have to download a QR Code to enter the city.
