Where the industry meets – padel

A lot of people are talking about the explosion of padel in South Africa. Asata President Sailesh Parbhu recently bounced an idea off his executive: how could this work for the travel industry?

They thought they should give it a try, and the result was impressive!

Rallied by Parbhu, on Tuesday this week, 40 teams of mostly padel beginners met at a facility in Killarney, Johannesburg, for a day of fun.

Participants paid a R350 entrance fee and Hollard came to the party sponsoring food and beverages. Games were short and played in doubles, and many of those who enjoyed it most hadn’t ever touched a padel bat.

The enthusiasm was felt across the board as juniors in travel mixed it up with senior directors. Leisure agents, TMCs, tour operators and airlines were all well represented, and each participant was a winner.

Plans are afoot for the next tournament, with whispers that Beachcomber’s recently retired Terry Munro was keenly interested in how yesterday’s event went and that he might be the catalyst for a similar fun day in Cape Town.
