Air Berlin has cancelled long-haul flights to Boston, Havana, Varadero in Cuba, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, Cancun, Curacao, Abu Dhabi, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
This follows the airline’s file for a provisional insolvency proceeding in order to continue with its restructuring plan.
Short-haul flights are still operating as per normal thanks to an emergency loan from the German government. The one long-haul route that is also still operating as per normal is the popular New York route.
The financial stopgap is supposed to last until November, giving bosses time to get the airline’s financial problems under control by selling off its planes and take-off and landing slots to other airlines.
If this plan fails, the airline will become liquidated and all flights will be cancelled. eTNW will keep readers updated on this story.
