Air China has announced it will re-start flights to Johannesburg.

The starting date and schedule are still unknown and the flights do not yet appear on GDSs.

As China’s commerce grinds back into first gear, the carrier says it will start or re-start 132 flights per week to 52 destinations, according to aviation website Simpleflying.

The carrier looks set to ply the route from Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) to Johannesburg three times a week, using a Boeing 777-300 ER on the route.

The airline also plans to reintroduce more routes that were stopped due to COVID-19, all of them from Beijing. They are Singapore, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Toronto, Rome.

Air China, founded in 1988, is a member of the Star Alliance.

It’s estimated that by 2041, 42% of aircraft deliveries will be accounted for within the Asia-Pacific region, half of that number to China. Boeing estimates that the Chinese aviation industry will need more than 8 000 new aircraft by 2041.
