Amalfi battles overtourism

The Italian government is implementing alternative traffic circulation restrictions to curb overtourism on the Amalfi Coast, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The restriction applies to the road that stretches along the Amalfi coastline between Via Carusiello and Via Torricella.

Vehicles with number plates ending in an even number can only drive on the road on even dates, and vice versa for number plates and dates ending in odd numbers. Anyone disobeying the new rule will be fined €60 (R1 170), reports france24.com. People with hotel reservations in the area will be exempt from the rule.

A new Bill that will extend the traffic restriction along the rest of the coast road, which connects 10 towns and cities, is being reviewed by the Italian Parliament.
