AMS, LGW impose caps

Schiphol International Airport in Amsterdam will limit passenger numbers for July and August due to a labour shortage at the airport.

The airport is facing a shortfall of security personnel and has placed a cap of 67 500 travellers per day for July, rising to 72 500 for August.

Schiphol said the consequences of not capping numbers would mean unmanageable queues and missed flights, which would lead to unsafe situations for both travellers and staff.

The airport said demand for air travel following the easing of travel restrictions, was exceeding even the highest expectations, and this came at a time when the labour market was incredibly tight.

London Gatwick has also announced that it will cap flights at 825 per day in July and 850 in August to avoid chaos and combat same-day cancellations by airlines, a decision it said came after a rapid upturn in air traffic levels, according to Reuters.
