Amsterdam cracks down on cruising

Amsterdam is planning to move its cruise terminal out of the city centre and halve the number of cruises permitted to dock at the city.

The terminal will be moved from its location on Veemkade by 2035 and, until it is moved, the Amsterdam City Council has plans to limit the number of cruise ships mooring at the Passengers Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) from 190 a year to a maximum of 100 per year from 2026.

Cruises will be required to use shore power by 2027, to reduce pollution and noise pollution from moored ships.

“The city council wants a liveable, clean and sustainable city. Sea cruising is a polluting form of tourism and contributes to crowds and emissions in the city,” said Alderman Hester van Buren.

The city of Rotterdam will now accommodate 40 cruise ships that will no longer be allowed to dock in Amsterdam. The council explained that an in-depth analysis had been carried out before the decisions were made, to determine the best proposed measures.

A feasibility study of moving the port to Coenhaven will be conducted in the coming months.
