Argentina launches digital VAT refunds

Argentina has announced the roll-out of its new VAT (IVA) refund system for international visitors. According to TravelMole, the system has been introduced by the country’s customs collection agency and is expected to speed up refunds by replacing the paper-based process with a digital one.

Under the new system, tourists purchasing goods produced in Argentina can reclaim the VAT already included in the item’s retail price.

Self-service kiosks will be introduced at departure points, allowing travellers to confirm purchases. Alternatively, travellers can make use of the mobile app. The system will then determine if an additional customs inspection is required.

Participating retailers are required to issue electronic invoices and submit transaction data to authorised refund operators. The system then generates an electronic refund voucher.

Refunds can be issued through international credit cards, bank transfers or cash, depending on the provider.

TravelMole reported that it was initially launched on June 2 at EZE, AEP and the Port of Buenos Aires. A nationwide roll-out is expected on July 2.

A step-by-step guide to recovering VAT using the digital platforms can be found on Visit Argentina’s website.
