B737-9 – Boeing cites lack of controls

After coming under fire for a potentially life-threatening problem on its B737-9 aircraft, Boeing CEO, David Coulhan, has reportedly put the fault down to what he called a “quality escape”.

“We’re going to want to know what broke down in our gauntlet of inspections, what broke down in the original work, that allowed for that escape to happen,” Coulhan told CNBC.

In an updated statement on its website, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), emphasised that an incident of this nature “should have never happened and it cannot happen again”. It also noted that it had formally notified Boeing that it would be conducting an investigation to understand if the manufacturer failed to ensure compliance with FAA regulations.

“This investigation is a result of an incident on a Boeing Model 737-9 MAX where it lost a ‘plug’-type passenger door, and additional discrepancies. Boeing’s manufacturing practices need to comply with the high safety standards they’re legally accountable to meet,” said the FAA.
