British Airways is advising South African passport holders transferring through the UK to Europe to make sure they have the right category of Schengen visa.
The warning comes after a number of people have arrived at the airports with Schengen visas that are not valid for South African passengers transferring through the United Kingdom.
“Although the airlines don’t make the rules, unfortunately we’re the ones who have to enforce them or we face hefty fines when people arrive without the right paperwork. When someone gets to the airport with the wrong type of visa we have no option but to offload them. It’s upsetting for the customer and causes a huge hassle for the travel agent,” said Sue Botes, British Airways commercial manager in South Africa.
South African passport holders planning to transfer through the United Kingdom should check with their travel agents or the embassy or consulate of the country to which they are travelling.
