Barcelona is set to raise its municipal tourist tax for all arrivals later this year and again in 2024. This tax is the surcharge imposed on visitors on top of the base tourist tax paid to the region rather than the city. The city received more than 8,5 million tourists in 2019.

All guests currently pay €1,75 (R30) per night in municipal tourist tax, The Independent reports. This will increase to €2,75 (R50) on April 1, 2023, and again to €3,25 (R60) from April 1, 2024.

A guest staying in a regulated tourist rental apartment currently pays €2,25 (R40) per night in base tourist tax, while a traveller in a five-star hotel pays €3,50 (R60) per night. A guest in a four-star hotel pays €1,70 (R30) a night, and cruise passengers in the city for more than 12 hours pay €3 (R60) per night.
