Barcelona will ban cruise ships from docking at its most central port from October 22, to reduce carbon emissions close to the city centre.
Cruise ships of all sizes will have to dock at the city’s southern port, along the Moll Adossat pier.
This will limit travellers’ access to the iconic Las Ramblas boulevard and the World Trade Centre. They will have to take a 30-minute shuttle bus to reach the area.
Although the ban will officially come into force later this month, the last cruise ship docked at the northern port on October 3. Lluís Salvado, President of the Port of Barcelona, called it a historic day for the city.
A new limit on the number of cruise ships permitted to dock in Barcelona will also be imposed on October 22, reducing the number from ten to seven.
