Blast from the past

TO coincide with the Anglo-Boer War centenary commemorations celebrations, tourists have been flocking to the Paul Kruger Country House Museum in the North West Province and now have the opportunity to dine at the newly opened 1872 Restaurant adjacent to the museum
Paul Kruger, president of the Boer Republic in the late 1800's, was responsible for declaring war on the English imperialists on October 11 1899, thereby starting the Anglo-Boer War (1899 to 1902).
The 1872 Restaurant is located in the restored home of Kruger's son, Pieter, in one of the buildings declared a national monument in 1936.
Dinner at 1872 is a mixture of traditional Afrikaans and Cape Malay cuisine and provides insight into past cooking methods such as home-baked bread and desserts which include 'koeksusters'.
Local arts and crafts are sold at another venue on the premises, Brokhorst House, in which Kruger and his family stayed while the main dwelling was being built.
