Border post to reopen after 10 years

20 Jan 2000 - by Dave Marsh

THE old border post between South Africa and Namibia, which was closed in 1990 after Namibia achieved independence from South Africa, has been authorised for reopening, subject to comments from the stakeholders.
South African National Parks (SANP) has issued a Record of Decision authorising the opening of the border post, located at the Auob River, which can be accessed through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - the first transfrontier park to be established in Southern Africa when former President Mandela and President Mogae of Botswana signed an agreement in April last year.
The Record of Decision authorises the establishment of an entrance gate between the south-eastern borders of SA and Botswana, across the Nossop River.
Construction will begin on both developments six weeks after the respective stakeholders have responded, according to spokesperson for SANP, Adel Smit.
To date, no deadlines have been set for public response.
