The R21 and R24 to OR Tambo International Airport will be blocked today, March 20, as a result of a planned protest march.
The purpose of the march is to highlight the grievances of the Ekurhuleni Regional Taxi Council against the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality over the withdrawal of funding for the KTVR bus operations and the R800 million that was intended to buy new KTVR buses.
The march is planned to block the R21 and R24 highways leading to and from the airport.
Protesters plan to hijack trucks and confiscate the keys, and take truck drivers out of the area by assigned taxis. These trucks will be used to close off the highway.
The on/off-ramp points where the highway will be blocked have not been disclosed at this point.
Further plans to block the railway line into Kempton Park are also in place, and these locations have likewise not been disclosed.
The protest will move to Germiston where it will meet associations operating in the eastern and southern parts of Ekurhuleni.
The combined protest will then move to the Mayoral Chambers in Germiston to deliver memorandum of their grievance.
Traffic to and from OR Tambo will be affected. Travellers are urged to avoid the affected routes.
