Britain braces for severe winter

20 Nov 2013 - by Tammy Sutherns

A UK travel alert has warned that from November 20, Britain will face Arctic conditions as temperatures are set to drop.
The travel alert, issued by Aero 24, says: “The big freeze will also bring the first widespread snowfall of winter with up to six inches expected over high ground. Freezing winds will lead to blizzard conditions in some parts while motorists across the country have been warned to take extra care as ice turns roads into skating rinks.”
The UK Met Office has also issued severe weather warnings for ice across much of northern, western and central areas of Britain.
“Roads are going to be treacherous as wet surfaces freeze overnight. Motorists should take extra care. Strong northerly winds in the north could trigger blizzard conditions. This extreme cold weather is likely to hold out for at least a couple of weeks and potentially into the middle of next month as cold air remains wedged over the UK,”  MeteoGroup says
Winter 2013 into 2014 is forecast to be severe with above-average snowfall and plunging temperatures. Long-range weather forecasts warn of bitter Arctic gales leading to feet-deep snow drifts right up until February. Snow forecasts for winter 2013 suggest much of the country will be hit by heavy wintry downpours with no let up well into next year.
Forecasters have also warned that winter could bring chaos similar to the big freeze of 2010/11 which saw airports close and roads grind to a standstill.
