Cape Wheel closes temporarily for relocation

21 Jun 2022

By the end of June, the iconic Cape Wheel will move from its current location in front of the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre to a new location.

Once it reopens in its new home, if will offer views of Robben Island and beyond, ships moving to and from the Waterfront and the commercial port. It will retain views of the city bowl and Table Mountain.

The wheel is due to undergo maintenance and will stop operating on Sunday, June 19.

It will be reassembled at the new site, close to the Waterfront’s boardwalk, with new activities and food and beverage offerings where it will open in time for the start of the Cape Town summer in November. The wheel has 30 fully enclosed air-conditioned cabins, two of them wheelchair friendly.

The new site, with access to Breakwater Park, also provides a more open and relaxed public space for visitors.

Work is under way at its current location to revamp the area into a landing plaza for public transport into the Waterfront.
