Catch the double-decker!

A new design for double-decker aircraft seating might just revolutionise the way passengers travel by air in the future, according to the Chaise Longue Airplane Seat concept devised by Alejandro Núñez Vicente, an interior designer.

The idea began as a project at Delft University in the Netherlands last year by Vicente, who was 21 years old at the time.

The seating design can accommodate more people on a single aircraft – the lower level of the double-decker plan allows passengers to sit with their legs stretched out straight in front of them, underneath the seated passengers above them.

The design, was nominated in the 2021 Crystal Cabin Awards, a prestigious award in the aviation industry worldwide, and will also be on show at the Aircraft Interiors Expo, the show for the cabin interiors industry.

In Vicente’s design, overhead cabin space for stowing onboard luggage has also been reimagined, now stored in between the two levels of seats.

Vicente believes the idea can be successfully implemented in a Boeing 747, Airbus A330 or any other medium to large wide-body aircraft in the near future
