Megan Taplin, Park Manager at Table Mountain National Park, wrote in an open letter to the industry yesterday (November 21) highlighting that there is an ongoing increase in crime on Signal Hill and Lion’s Head, causing concerns among both locals and international tourists.
“We understand the allure of these locations, especially during sunrise and sunset, but recent incidents have highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures,” Taplin said.
She advised that activities on Signal Hill and Lions Head should be limited to the hours between sunrise and sunset to ensure the well-being of all participants.
“We would like to request that tour operators refrain from suggesting that visitors engage in full moon or night time hikes on Lions Head. Although this has become a popular activity, the safety of visitors and park users is compromised, both by crime issues (which are more prevalent during night time and early morning) as well as by physical safety issues as it is much more likely that a visitor may trip and fall and that it will be more difficult to assist them in the dark. This measure aims to strike a balance between allowing visitors to enjoy the breathtaking views and ensuring their safety during times when criminal activities may be more prevalent,” Taplin said.
However, she did mention that there were safety and security measures in place, with strong collaborative efforts between SANParks, the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement, the South African Police Services and many other stakeholders.
“It is essential to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the rising crime rates. Co-operation between tour operators, local authorities, and law enforcement is crucial to maintaining the integrity of these experiences and safeguarding the reputation of Cape Town as a premier tourist destination,” Taplin said.
