Croatian island says the party is over

The Croatian island of Hvar, known as a popular nightlife spot, is taking steps to move away from party tourism, shifting towards a more family-friendly and sustainable tourism model.

Hvar city councillors voted for noise restrictions during the summer season, despite lobbying from the hospitality sector, which pushed to bypass noise restrictions by declaring the island a year-round entertainment zone.

Noise will be limited to 85 decibels, the equivalent of a noisy restaurant, which will affect clubs and outdoor venues. There are also several regulations on appropriate clothing and behaviour that could result in fines.

The restrictions come as Croatia pushes for more quality tourism. Many town centres, including Split and Dubrovnik, have already introduced spot fines of up to €700 (R13 775) for inappropriate behaviour, including walking through towns shirtless or in swimwear.
