EES system launch to take six months

12 May 2024

The British Transport Ministry says that the EU Entry Exit System (EES) will not be introduced all at once, but gradually over a period of six months.

The EES system will be “soft-launched,” according to the UK’s Minister for Roads and Local Transport Guy Opperman. The grace period will serve to avoid the queuing and complications that UK officials remain concerned about.

The Minister made these comments in a meeting on the new system on May 1.

Implentation is expected to begin on October 6, but officials including the UK Minister of State at the Home Office Tom Pursglove are not confident that the EES app will be ready in time

The EU said that Authorities are working on the app’s development, but Member States will be able to opt out of using the app.

The Head of Eurotunnel has expressed confidence in the new system, saying that journeys will take five-to-seven minutes longer than usual but extra lanes and technology will ensure that the process runs smoothly.
