El Salvador is now charging passengers from Africa and India a US$1 130 (R21 155) fee to prevent immigration to the US through the Central American country.
According to a statement from El Salvador’s port authority, passengers travelling with an Indian or one of 57 African passports must pay the fee due to increased use of the country’s main international airport.
The revenue generated will be used to improve the airport, reports gulfnews.com.
Airlines are required to notify Salvadorian authorities of passengers who come from African countries and India.
