United Airlines and Eve Air Mobility have announced plans to bring Urban Air Mobility to San Francisco by launching electric commuter flights throughout the Bay Area in 2026.

The two companies will work with local and state officials and infrastructure, energy, and technology providers to introduce electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft flights to the area. The aircraft will offer United Airlines customers a fast, economical, and lower-carbon way to travel to its hub airports and commute in dense urban environments.

Last year, United Airlines announced that it would be investing US$15 million (R276,5m) in Eve Air Mobility and that a conditional purchase agreement for 200 eVTOLs plus 200 options had been signed.

Eve Air Mobility’s eVTOLs will be 100% electric and have a range of 100km, allowing them to complete a variety of urban air mobility missions in San Francisco while operating at minimal noise levels.
