Farewell, El Al

South Africa has seen the last of El Al’s flights.

The airline’s South African office is now permanently closed, the final flight having flown from Johannesburg to Tel Aviv last week.

El Al flights to South Africa began in 1951, 73 years ago.

The airline calls the suspension of the route between the two cities “indefinite”. El Al had one to two flights per week on the route and these represented the only direct service from South Africa to Israel.

The aircraft used on the route was a Boeing 787-800 and the airline has said it will deploy the aircraft elsewhere.

Agents in Southern Africa with queries are advised via a corporate communication from the airline to contact the call centre in Israel telephonically or by WhatsApp on: +972 3 9771111. They may also contact the London call centre on: +44 203 204 0300.

The airline says team members in those two centres will be available to assist agents with any enquiries or support they may require during the transition period.
