Gautrain – where to next?

THE Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) plans to open a number of new stations after completing a feasibility study and submitting it to National Treasury for approval. The agency announced  in 2017 that it would conduct the feasibility study into the expansion of the train network, saying that it would require 12 new train sets.

“The feasibility study concludes that the extension of the Gautrain rail network will provide significant economic and transport-related benefits to the province and the country at large; that it offers value for money, and appropriate risk transfer if procured as a public-private partnership,” the GMA said. Planned stations include Boksburg, the East Rand Mall, Lanseria,

Roodepoort, Fourways and Sunninghill. Once Treasury has approved the plans, the planning and Environmental Impact Assessment of Phase 1 will begin, says  Dr Barbara Jensen, GMA senior account executive manager, Communication and Marketing. The agency says it cannot give dates for the completion of the expansion.
