Greek islands to cap cruise ships

Greece is planning to limit the number of cruise ships calling at its islands to tackle overtourism.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that restrictions were likely to come into place next year, reports Bloomberg.

He said Santorini and Mykonos were most affected by overtourism, adding that cruise ship tourists were crowding out other tourists who spent more money in the islands by booking accommodation.

“There are people spending a lot of money to be on Santorini and they don’t want the island to be swamped. Plus, the island can’t afford it, even in terms of security,” said Mitsotakis.

He said the number of cruise ships allowed to dock simultaneously at each port would be limited. More specific details are yet to be announced.
