LESS than a year after the Cape Metropolitan Area (CMA) became the first tourism destination in Africa to commit to a Green Globe 21 destination programme, Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has been awarded the Green Globe 21 Achievement Award for environmental management and awareness.
Green Globe 21 is an international organisation specialising in developing environmental management and awareness for the travel and tourism industry.
Rick Taylor, chief executive officer of the CMA says this award is not only a great boost to the local tourism industry in general but is very significant from an environmental tourism perspective as well.
A representative from CMA will receive the award at a ceremony held at ITB in Berlin on Wednesday, March 15.
"This award will place even greater attention on Cape Town's most famous tourism icon, Table Mountain, and we're proud that it is setting the standard for the South African tourism industry," says Taylor.
Managing director of TMACC, John Harrison said the company became a member of Green Globe 21 in July last year.
"The Achievement Award acknowledges TMACC's work in maintaining strict environmental standards in the day to day operations, as well as in our endeavour to strike the right balance between progress, development and a respect for the environment."
