Investigation into OR Tambo bomb hoax continues

Security personnel remain on high alert at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, and all necessary precautions will be taken to ensure the continued safety of passengers following last night’s hoax bomb scare at the Domestic Arrivals terminal.

This statement was issued by Acsa, apologising for the inconvenience caused during the evacuation of passengers on Wednesday, May 31.

The airport authority noted that the matter would continue to be investigated by SAPS to establish the origin and motive of the individuals behind this incident.

On Wednesday evening (around 17h00), Acsa received notification from an anonymous caller of an alleged bomb threat at the domestic arrivals hall.

“Upon learning of the potential security risk, we immediately evacuated all passengers and staff from the area that was potentially at risk. After a thorough investigation by the South African Police Service, it emerged that there was no reason for concern, normal service has since resumed, and the domestic arrivals hall was declared safe at 19h25,” explained an Acsa spokesperson.

As a result of this temporary disruption to regular operations, eight domestic flights were affected.

“Acsa’s primary concern will always be the security of our passengers and staff, and it was imperative that action be taken immediately to ensure their safety,” added the spokesperson.
