KLM caps night flights at Schiphol

05 Feb 2024

KLM will implement restrictions on its nighttime flights from March 30. The cap on nighttime flights is intended to curb noise and environmental pollution in Amsterdam.

The airline has begun rescheduling transcontinental flights accordingly.

KLM will reduce flight movements between the hours of 24h00 and 06h00.The first affected transcontinental flights are arrivals at Schiphol from Lagos, Accra, Atlanta and Paramaribo. These flights will be pushed onward by about an hour to arrive at the airport after 06h00.

Airlines have pushed back at the Dutch government’s efforts to cap flight movements, an endeavour that started in 2020.

In November last year, the government decided to suspend the implementation of a flight movement cap for 2024, but KLM, in response, announced it shared the government’s environmental concerns and would take its own steps to reduce noise pollution and environmental footprint.

So far, other airlines and cargo operations remain unchanged. The new adjustments will not affect KLM flights from Johannesburg, which arrive in Schiphol at 10h00, and from Cape Town, arriving at 11h00 local time.
