South Africans travelling with their children under the age of 18 are advised to apply for an unabridged birth certificate if their departure date falls on July 1 onwards. Many travellers and agents have expressed concern over Home Affairs’ turnaround time in issuing the documents but the Department told eTNW that as long as parents had proof that they had applied, they will be allowed to exit and enter the country.

Ricardo Abramse, a spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs, said that as of July 1, those who have applied but not yet received the unabridged certificate will need to prove that they have applied for it by presenting the receipt that is issued on application as well as the abridged birth certificate. Ricardo added that those who departed before the implementation date but returning after July 1 would not be affected. For more on this issue, see the next edition of TNW.
