Lebombo border post ‘back to normal’

The Lebombo border post between South Africa and Mozambique remains operational following violent protests after the country's election results.

The Acting Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Jane Thupana, said on Sunday, October 27, that the border post had not been affected and remained operational with both the movement of people and goods being facilitated as normal.

Natalie Tenzer-Silva, Director of Mozambique tour operator Dana Tours, also confirmed to Travel News that the situation was back to normal “for the time being”.

“The border is open and we are operating as normal. There has also been some clean up in the city [Maputo] following the barricades that were put in place when the protests started,” she said.

Thupana added that travellers were concerned about the tensions when crossing the border, which had the potential to create long queues.

“The BMA team supported by other law enforcement authorities are on the ground to manage any movement blockages.

“An alert has been issued for travellers to avoid night travel due to the current situation. However, should the situation worsen and become unsafe for travellers, the BMA would inform the travellers accordingly,” said Thupana.
