Lufthansa and Germanwings (4U) are increasing capacity in the upcoming winter flight schedules.
The two airlines will offer a weekly total of 12 162 flights in the winter timetable, which runs from October 27 to March 29.
Lufthansa will increase flights to Shanghai, Chicago and Mexico City, using the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. The B747-8 will commence Frankfurt-Chicago flights when the winter timetable comes into force. In addition, services will be increased to daily from Frankfurt to Phila¬delphia on the US east coast and to Dammam in Saudi Arabia.
For the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Sochi, Russia, LH will offer a special service from January 24 to March 17 on an Airbus A321.
Germanwings will take over all LH connec¬tions in Europe that do not operate through the Frankfurt and Munich hubs. According to present plans, flights to 23 of the destinations previously served by LH out of Hamburg and Berlin will be flown in winter by 4U.
In the coming months, the following routes from Hamburg will be taken over by 4U: Amsterdam, Birmingham, Budapest, Geneva, London, Madrid, Milan, Manchester, Oslo, Paris, Stockholm and Zurich.
The transfer of flights from Hamburg will be completed by the end of the winter flight schedules at the end of March. Passengers on flights from Berlin will be able to fly with 4U in winter to Birmingham, Bologna, Bucharest, Geneva, Helsinki, London, Malaga, Nuremberg, Rome, Milan and Vienna. The transfer of all direct ser¬vices will be completed in the course of summer 2014. LH’s direct flights from Dussel¬dorf will be taken over by 4U in the 2014 summer timetable. Once the transfer has taken place, LH passengers who have already booked flights will automatically be re-booked on 4U.
LH will also discontinue African connections to Libreville (Gabon) and Pointe Noire (Republic of Congo) at the end of this year.
LH will now offer passengers a new online planning tool, called the Journey Planner. Alongside the LH flight schedules, users of the tool can view all other transport options to and from the airport, with information on the timetables of more than 600 urban or public transport systems as well as those published by rail and shipping companies.
