Local airlines plan to take to the skies

As the country moves to level three of lockdown today (June 1), airlines are preparing to resume limited services.

Cemair has said it will be ready to fly as early as June 5 between Johannesburg and Cape Town and between Johannesburg and Durban from June 8. “Bookings are open. Flight schedules will be enhanced, subject to demand,” the airline says.

FlySafair will start flying from June 15, with ticket sales expected to open this week on the following routes:

  • JHB (OR Tambo International Airport) – CPT
  • JHB (OR Tambo International Airport) – DBN
  • CPT – DBN
  • Lanseria International Airport – CPT
  • Lanseria International Airport – DBN

Lanseria operations are pending certification of the airport by the Department of Transport, FlySafair said in a statement.

“We remain concerned about the feasibility of operating under the prescribed restrictions but we cannot leave our staff unpaid any longer and we feel obligated to do our part in reopening the South African economy,” says Kirby Gordon, chief marketing officer of FlySafair.

The airline, which hopes to release its new schedules as soon as they are approved, is expecting to operate between 20 and 26 flights a day, with the possible exception of Saturdays.
