Lufthansa launches sustainability platform

The Lufthansa Group's central digitalisation unit has launched a CO2 compensation platform, Squake, aimed at companies from the travel, mobility and transport industries. By using an API, companies can now calculate and offset the CO2 emissions of the services they offer.

When customers of an online travel agency book a trip using different modes of transport, the platform automatically calculates the CO2 emissions of the entire trip. Customers can then offset the calculated emissions during the booking process.

"The travel and mobility market is urgently looking for effective solutions to increase sustainability. Our answer to this is the climate tech start-up Squake, which helps companies accelerate their development of sustainable products," says Christine Wang, md Lufthansa Innovation Hub.

Companies can integrate the Squake interface into their own online portals. This means they can immediately offer ‘green rates’, or make their entire offering CO2-neutral.

"Profitability and sustainability have to work together," says Dan Kreibich, project lead of Squake. "We’re convinced that sustainable products contribute to sales growth."
