Malawi LCC set to launch flights in January

Lakestar Express, a new low-cost carrier in Malawi, is set to take off in January. The airline says it will start with domestic routes before introducing flights to Lusaka, Johannesburg, Harare, Nairobi and eastern Mozambique.
Malawi24 reports that the airline currently has two 19-seat Beechcraft 1900Ds which will be used for flights between Lilongwe and Blantyre, as well as the northern region.

Allain Chidzanja, the airline’s ceo, told the local media that Lakestar Express had been given an air service licence by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works and that they were now hoping to be issued an air operator’s certificate (AOC).
The Ministry said the LCC had received an air service licence as it fulfilled the economic regulation requirements but added that, to get an AOC it would need to start a technical certification process.
Chidzanja said: “We want to make sure that passengers can fly between Blantyre and Lilongwe and we want to revive the Northern route in Mzuzu, Karonga and Likoma as it is becoming a hot spot, and this will help us revive tourism as well.”
The LCC will only be allowed to operate the announced routes once it has received an AOC.
