Marriott International has become the largest hospitality group to receive an approval by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

SBTi provides businesses with a range of tools to assist them in setting greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. Following its approval of Marriott’s plan, the hotelier will reduce its scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 46,2% and scope 3 emissions by 27,5% by 2030, reports travelagentcentral.com.

“Marriott is focusing our efforts in three distinct areas: energy reduction, sourcing more energy from renewables, and purchasing goods with lower carbon footprints across our portfolio of over 8 800 properties in 139 countries and territories,” said Anthony Capuano, President and CEO of Marriott, on his LinkedIn page.

Through programmes such as its Energy Optimization Programme, Marriott is implementing several measures to meet its nett-zero target by 2050. It has also launched a social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction, and is investing in and channelling efforts towards:

  • Efficient consumption of energy and water across its properties;
  • Improved management of its waste and, in particular, food waste;
  • Third-party sustainability certifications;
  • Ecosystem restoration initiatives; and
  • The responsible and local sourcing of its goods and services.
