Mfuwe International to be overhauled

Construction on the upgrade of Zambia’s Mfuwe International Airport in South Luangwa National Park is set to start on June 13.

The airport serves over twenty lodges and campsites and has a runway measuring 2,2 km.

Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) said the airport would remain operational while the rehabilitation was ongoing.

Initially, ZACL planned a complete closure for three months. However, after consultations with stakeholders and considering the disruption during peak tourist season, the government decided to revise the plan and ordered the airport to remain open.

The upgrades are crucial to address deterioration in the runway, taxiway, and apron pavements, and will include improvements to the airfield ground lighting system, reconstruction of the inner perimeter fence, and extension of the terminal building.

The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has provided the necessary funding for these improvements to enhance the airport's safety and security.

Zevyanji Sinkala, ZACL board chairperson, said the corporation was committed to maintaining passenger safety and comfort during these upgrades. “We appreciate the co-operation and understanding of all stakeholders as we enhance Mfuwe International Airport's infrastructure.”
