Mozambique liberalises skies, LCC enters the fray

LOW-COST carrier fastjet

has announced plans to

launch domestic flights in

Mozambique. Chief executive,

Nico Bezuidenhout, said the

development marked the

carrier’s first expansion since

the implementation of its

‘Stabilisation Plan’.

The development comes

after Mozambique recently,

for the first time, authorised

foreign airlines to operate

domestic routes within

Mozambique.

According to a report in

local daily, The Southern

Times, Ethiopian Airlines

and Malawi Airlines have

successfully applied for

authorisation to fly the

domestic routes, while

fastjet will launch its flights

in partnership with Solenta

Aviation Mozambique, a

division of shareholder,

Solenta Aviation.

Solenta Aviation

Mozambique is one of five

Mozambican companies

authorised to operate

domestic routes. Others

include Mozambique Airlines

(LAM) and its subsidiary

Mocambique Expresso (MEX).

Initially, fastjet plans to

serve some of the larger

commercial centres in

Mozambique with Embraer

E145 50-seat aircraft.

The airline will be the first

low-cost carrier to enter

the Mozambican market.

According to Nico, sustained

demand for both leisure and

business travel presents a

positive business case.
