MSC Cruises goes ‘blue’ to go green

MSC Cruises says it will achieve a 29% reduction in carbon intensity across its entire fleet by 2024 compared with 2008.

The cruise line plans to reach a 40% reduction target by 2030 and has committed to becoming the world’s first fully carbon-neutral global cruise line.

All CO₂ emissions from MSC Cruises’ fleet will be offset from January 1, 2020 through high-grade offset projects that will rely on blue carbon credits, which support coastal habitats. (Blue carbon is the carbon stored in coastal & marine ecosystems).

This is the key to MSC Cruises’ overall long-term goal to deliver zero-emission operations.

Currently, MSC Grandiosa and ten other ships in MSC Cruises’ entire fleet of 17 are equipped for cleaner emissions with hybrid (closed-loop) EGCS.

The six other ships will be retrofitted with the technology by the end of 2023 and until then will rely on the use of low sulphur fuels.
