NCL founder dies

Knut Kloster, one of the founders of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) Holdings has died at the age of 91.

“He was a pioneer and ahead of his time, exploring every opportunity to be at the forefront and break boundaries. His passion went beyond cruising with contributions to social, cultural, humanitarian and environmental causes worldwide,” said NCL Holdings president and ceo, Frank Del Rio.

Starting in 1966, Knut tapped into America’s growing demand for international travel by offering roundtrip cruises from the then-nascent Port of Miami on the 550-passenger MS Sunward, in the process creating the modern cruise industry we know today, said NCL. His innovations continued, founding the industry’s first private island in Great Stirrup Cay and launching the industry’s first mega-ship in the Caribbean with the SS Norway.

The cruise company will dedicate a section of its yet-to-open new terminal at Port Miami to him.
