OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, have provided a glimpse into what can be expected from AI in the travel industry with the creation of Operator, capable of performing autonomous tasks like finding and booking travel products.

Operator can go into the web and perform tasks on its own. It can interact with a webpage by typing, clicking and scrolling. The tool is currently only available to OpenAI Pro Users in the US while it is in its testing stages.

Users describe the task they would like completed and Operator will perform it. Users can choose to take over control of the browser at any point and can add custom instructions, such as setting preferences for airlines on Booking.com.

The tool can fill out forms, although users are asked to take over when inputting sensitive information such as login credentials, and Operator will ask for approval before submitting an order.

According to OpenAI, Operator is still learning and evolving, it currently encounters challenges when managing calendars, for example, but this testing stage and user feedback will enhance the tool’s accuracy and reliability.
