Great Plains Conservation is expanding its offering by building new camps and relocating and refurbishing existing camps in Kenya and Zimbabwe.

A new camp, Tembo Plains, in the Sapi Reserve, in the riverine forest along the edge of the Zambezi, east of Mana Pools National Park, is set to open on July 1. It will offer four guest tents and a two-bedroom family unit that will accommodate four adults, or two adults and two children age 12 and up. In addition, the Tembo Suite, comprising two tents with a shared lounge, dining area and pool, is ideal for families.

Activities include day and night game drives, walking safaris, canoeing and boating. Conservation couple, Dereck and Beverly Joubert are designing the camp, paying homage to Zimbabwe’s ancient cultures with artefacts in their designs.

Other changes and upgrades coming to Great Plains safari company include:

  • In Kenya, Great Plains is completing a brand-new Jahazi Suite at Mara Plains, due to open in June. The two-bedroom suite follows the villa concept originally started at Zarafa Dhow Suite in Botswana.
  • Mara Plains Camp is undergoing a refurbishment that includes a new honeymoon suite.
  • Mara Expedition Camp will be relocated to a hilltop within the Maasai Mara region. It will have five tents and will be open by June, in time for this year’s Great Migration.
  • Mara Toto will reopen in a new location along the banks of the Ntiakitiak River on the border of the Maasai Mara.
  • Mpala Jena Camp in Victoria Falls is being completely rebuilt with a new open-plan rustic design. It will reopen by the middle of the year.
