Faizal Gangat,
owner of Cape
Capers Tours,
died on June 4
in the Vincent
Palotti Hospital
in Cape Town,
after battling
a chronic lung
disease. He has
been praised
by colleagues
and business partners
for his commitment and
dedication to developing
tourism in Cape Town. An
avid reader with a thirst
for knowledge, history,
places and people, he
became a top tourist
guide, winning tourism
awards in 2002, 2003 and
2004. “I remember him
as one of the pioneers
who helped
shape township
tourism into what
is regarded today
as a mainstream
tour and not
the anomaly it
was probably
regarded as in
the beginning,”
said Enver Mally,
director African
Eagle Daytours and
chairman of the board of
Cape Town Tourism.
“The work that he did
in the townships in the
early 2000s in tourism
development and his
promotion of cultural
tourism is invaluable and
Faizal’s legacy will live on,”
added Enver Duminy, ceo
of Cape Town Tourism.
