SAA threatens legal action

SAA has extended its cancelled domestic flights for Tuesday, November 19 and Wednesday, November 20.

SAA will resume flights to six regional African destinations from Tuesday, November 19: Accra, Lagos, Lusaka, Maputo, Windhoek and Harare. Passengers on these flights will be rebooked on the reinstated services and contacted accordingly.

The airline also says it will consider legal action if the striking unions fail to retract allegations about the airline’s safety.

A statement by acting ceo of SAA, Zuks Ramasia, called on the South African Cabin Crew Association and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa to correct (Numsa) “untruthful and unfounded allegations that flying the national carrier is in any way unsafe”.

“If they fail to do so, we will consider taking legal action. We would never put our long-established reputation at risk. The safety of our customers is always our prime responsibility.”

The statement went on to address Numsa’s intention to start a secondary strike. A full-on aviation strike, which could include the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union and National Transport Movement,  will “affect the competitiveness of the South African economy as a whole”, according to the statement.
