Spain fines jetty jumpers

Spanish officials are to enforce the ban on beachgoers jumping off the jetty at Playa de Muro, one of Mallorca’s most popular resorts, and threatened them with huge fines.

Muro is famous among tourists for its beautiful beach and water sports and, despite its shallow water, visitors tend to think the jetty jump is safe. Depending on the rocks and coral on the ocean floor beneath the jetty, the water below ranges from 60cm to about two metres deep.

Last month, two people were injured after they jumped headfirst off the jetty. The first person suffered a neck injury and broken nose, and the second a head injury.

Although resorts have a municipal order prohibiting these jumps, tourists are unfazed by potential fines. Officials say they have seen seven incidents so far this summer.

Officials will now issue tourists with fines of €900 (R18 640) if they are caught jumping off the jetty.
